Industrial gearboxes require precision alignment with Motors and other drives and units in order to ensure efficient and breakdown-free running. The alignment of a gearbox refers to positioning of the gearbox in relation to the drive (or driven) unit to ensure that the gearbox input and output shafts are perfectly aligned and coupled with the respective shafts of adjoining plant items.

Misalignment occurs when a gearbox and adjoining unit are positioned out of line in such a way that a perfect rotational centreline through the coupled shafts is not achieved. A rotating shaft that is not correctly aligned will rotate in an eccentric fashion and create undue forces on the coupling, shafts, units themselves and their components. These stresses lead to accelerated component wear and eventual breakdown.

Conducting Gearbox Alignment

Gearbox shafts can be quickly and easily aligned by using a Laser Shaft Alignment system..

The process is straightforward: two laser units are attached to the shafts that require alignment, one either side of the coupling. Measurements are then recorded from 3 points, either by rotating the shaft through 30-40 degree segments, or by use of a special moveable fixture in cases where the shafts themselves will not rotate. The shaft alignment system automatically measures the alignment of the two shafts, and displays to the user if the shaft is or isn’t aligned and indicating the precise amount of angular or offset misalignment.

Correcting misalignment is also a straightforward process. Our system has a 3D animated interface which shows users the exact amount of correction required to re-position the gearbox or motor so that perfect alignment through the centreline of the two shafts is achieved.

Our system has a screen so that any changes made to the position of the motor or gearbox are instantly displayed on the screen. This system indicates the thickness of shims that are required to be added or removed from under the front or rear feet of the unit. Arrows also indicate the amount of horizontal correction required to position the motor or gearbox correctly.

Monition Gearbox alignment engineers are experienced and trained in the alignment of horizontally and vertically mounted gearboxes and drives. Gearbox Alignment - Alignment of Machine Trains

Machine train alignment is probably the most difficult and demanding task of all alignment engineering skills. Often a machine train is part of a critical production, the most expensive and the most costly to production loss when it goes down.

A machine train (power train or multiple drive units) is three or more units with rotating shafts connected to each other. Aligning a machine train can be a cumbersome task with a large risk for making time consuming errors. In many cases, one or more of the machines are affected by thermal growth, and to obtain a precision alignment you need to compensate for that. Using the expansion kit for machine trains, you can perform an express alignment of machine trains.

The application software will provide you with:

  • Rapid start up and measurement - with compensation for thermal offset
  • Option to insert the whole machine configuration in advance, which can then be saved for future measurements
  • Use of rapid mode for quick measurement
  • 3D animations guide you, and show you what has been done so far, and what you need to do next
  • Result screen displaying both horizontal and vertical views
  • Green-Amber-Red colour guiding informs if machines are in or out of tolerance
  • The 'minimal moves function' automatically chooses the best reference machine, which is illustrated on the screen. Reference machine can also be selected manually
  • Full result, horizontally and vertically, is shown directly
